WEST AFRICAN DRUM AND DANCE WORKSHOP

  • Date: 4 July, 12:30 PM

Ansoumana 'Vieux' Bakayoko and Idrissa Camara are re-united in this exciting drum and dance workshop. As musical director and lead choreographer of some of West Africas most prominent ballet troupes these two offer a unique chance to really underestand the 'ballet'....the exciting performance format made famous by Les Ballets Africains du Guinee.........how to play the djembe to performance standard  and how to dance exciting choreographies and solos to challenge the djembe folas.Suitable for all drummers and dancers , come and enjoy this unique oportunity.

Ansoumana Bakayoko began learning his craft at the age of three in Mali, the home of his father. From mixed Malian and Guinean heritage he is an outstanding purveyor of his craft and his knowledge of the music and the traditions is second to none. Leaving home at the age of twelve he travelled to Senegal to study with a series of masters. Before moving to England, Vieux spent fourteen years as lead artist with the Bougarabou, a leading ‘ballet’ troupe. Since arriving in the UK in 2006 he has wowed audiences at Tribe of Doris, Womad, Winter Drum, Drum Camp, One World and Godiva Festival among others. Vieux is the musical director and principle soloist of his own ensemble, “Hamana Bjemakan.”Idrissa Camara is a Master Dancer and choreographer from Guinea. Idrissa trained with the Ballet Bassikolo de Guinea from the age of 11 and was protege of Bangalli Bangoura the most famous dancer from Ballets Africain de Guinea, and you can see this reflected in Idrissa's distinctive dance style. Idrissa later became Choreographer of Ballet Bassikolo , Soleil de Afrique, and Africa Danse as well as dance companies in Gambia and Senegal. Idrissa pioneered work with The Association of culture and theatre for the deaf in Guinea and still holds a honorary professor position with this revered national institution. In this class; Ansoumana will be teaching students various rhythms during the drumming workshop.Students are invited to stay to play along for the dance workshop. For drummers; experiencing familiar rhythms through the eyes of a dancer will open up your awareness of what is happening within the music and take your playing to a whole new level!

Idrissa will introduce you to some of the traditional dances that are performed for particular rhythms, and help you to understand and experience the role of dance within traditional music. Traditionally, Music and Dance are performed together and the conversation that happens between the musicians and the dancers is a vital part of the performance.   For dancers; This class is suitable for experienced dancers and beginner’s alike, and you will be very welcome even if think you have 2 left feet and have never danced before in your life!

Just £25 for full workshop of drumming and dance or drumming for the dance, if you want to choose a half session its £15 ie just drum or just dance. Advanced booking is essential to guarantee the workshop goes ahead.....we really want to offer good workshops and we need you to support them! 12:30 - 5:30 pm

The Free Man Movement - Reclaiming Mastership

  • Date: 9 June, 07:00 PM

£5 waged/£3 unwaged....We spell all our words because all our words are really Spells....so what happens when the Spell for ‘God’ is wrong? For millennia the search for this ‘God’ thing has obsessed mankind in every area – religion, science & philosophy have all applied their full might to ’seeking’.  By now, with all the millions of searchers, you’d think we would have collectively ‘found’ and agreed the fact. Clearly something has gone wrong….Are we rubbish at ‘searching’?  Is this ‘God’ thing really difficult to spot? The facts would say not, so what’s happened? Only one thing…that our perception of the object of our search, our idea/expectation of what we are looking for: this ‘God’ thing, is somehow flawed……Delving into the mysteries of language, religion, and Masonic/Judaic manipulation at the highest level, this talk will take you on a new search for this ‘God’ thing, a re-search, and the result is sure to shake your ideas of religion, self and the world to their core. Come along and discover The Lost Word, The First Word and The Last Word....this is an event not to be missed...ffi www.alternativeanswers.net

The Nik Turner Band LIVE

  • Date: 23 January, 08:00 PM

From the space jazz of 'Hawkwind', writing seminal anthems such as 'Master of the Universe', 'Brainstorm', and 'D-rider' as the driving force in the creation of the legend and mythology that created that band's success, to 60's ska 'Skastars'. From the pomp rock of the 'Imperial Pompadours' to musical, political, satirical punk cabaret with 'Inner City Unit'. From busking cool groovy music on the streets of Cardiff and Mexico City to Nik Turner's 'Fantastic All Stars' playing cool Latino jazz. From equally fantastic Nik Turner's 'Galaktikos' playing big funk Latino hot grooves, to the 'Nik Turner Band' playing some of all that and more. Guested and recorded with numerous bands, including 'Sham 69', 'The Damned','Stranglers', 'Ruts', 'Spirit' with Randy California, 'Utopians', 'Guillemots' etc. Latest release - 'Otherworld' by Space Ritual (Esoteric Recordings 2007),

  • Date: 15 December, 08:00 PM

Nick Addey, author of ‘Stars – the Real Pictures’, will present a starshow unlike any other starshow, for the stars are not just diamonds in the sky, they hold answers. Many a curious question will find its answer in the heavens. Have you ever wondered, for instance, how Nursery Rhymes have endured unchanged for centuries? Earthly explanations will always be unsatisfactory for the answer lies in the stars – the unchanging, uncompromising stars.
Nick will also be signing copies of his book in the Gothic Image Bookshop. Come along for a star chat between 1 and 2 p.m.
For more info on Nick’s star projects check out www.realstarpictures.com

The Roots Union plus support

  • Date: 21 April, 08:00 PM

On Tuesday 21st April popular acoustic band The Roots Union, previously known as The School of Trobar, will play Glastonbury Assembly Rooms as part of their tour of the U.K. Formed originally as a duo, the band consists of Tobias Ben Jacob on vocals and guitar, Phillip Henry on virtuosic Indian-style slide guitar and harmonica with recent additional musicians on violin and percussion. Fabulous Furry Folk Club organisers Emma and Nathan saw School of Trobar play on the festival circuit the summer before last, and have been looking forward to hosting a gig for them in Glastonbury ever since. ’They blew us away with the beauty of what they were doing. The lyrics were heartfelt and profound, Phillip’s slide playing was the best we’ve ever heard, and the overall effect was deeply moving. We never forgot them!’. The band headlined Glastonbury Assembly Rooms’ ’FFF’ folk night last November, then returned in January, and enjoyed the evening so much they have decided to return for a full length gig on their own terms, with support from local singer / songwriter Sarah Curtis. Lovers of beautiful acoustic and folk music are guaranteed to enjoy the evening’s combination of talented musicians. The doors to the event open at 8 p.m. and the price of entry is £3 on the door.
